Getting Better At Quantitative Skills Through Films

Many of you probably had a very tough childhood due to your poor quantitative skills. We all have been there and done that at some point in our lives, so it might make you feel better to know you are not the only one.

Did you hate word problems as a child? Our hearts go out to you if that’s the case. A lot of quantitative and math symbols didn’t exist until the 16th century, which is hard to believe. The equations used to be written in words before that. Can you imagine how hard that would have been for the people back then?

Thankfully, that has changed. You only get to solve these word problems in the early years of your education. Did you ever think of learning quantitative skills in a fun way? You might be wondering how Math and fun could even be used in the same sentence; but yes, that is possible. We are about to tell you how in this post.

Learning math through movies is one of the most easiest and joyous ways. You are watching a great movie while being taught the hardest subject (for most people) on this planet at the same time. This post talks about some of the best movies you should watch if you want to get better at Math.

Friendly Reminder: If you are looking for an affordable cable provider then Spectrum is a great option for entertainment. You will have access to some of the best film channels.

Below are some of the best films to watch:

Good Will Hunting

With its superb dialogue and non-melodramatic acting, this movie proves that life is made up of a series of choices, some good some bad, and not everything is always in our control. You would want things in a certain way and you can even try your best to make that happen, but life might surprise you with its plans.

It is one of those movies that instantly brings back memories of friendship and gives hope. Played by Matt Damon, Will is a brilliant academic who solves the most challenging equations internationally. However, he chooses to earn his living by working odd construction jobs and janitorial duties despite his God-given talent. Why is that so? Well, you have to watch the film to find out.

A Beautiful Mind

We are sure most of you have already seen this film. Based on a true story, this is another beautiful movie you can watch and learn at the same time. This film is based on the story of John Nash, a mathematician battling paranoid schizophrenia.

Despite his health problems, Nash made substantial contributions to mathematics. It is just the perfect film if you are curious to find the effects of mental illness on a genius.

21

You can tell by the name that it is a Math movie. Math-related movies are rarely as entertaining as “21.“. Instead of covering games of chance, this film deals with a true story. This movie depicts a group of students from MIT and their professor going to Las Vegas in 1993 hoping to take millions by counting cards at blackjack.

Performing the role of a professor, Kevin Spacey is the highlight of this movie. In flashbacks, we see Ben working in a secret group with his mathematics professor Micky Rosa. They aimed to develop a blackjack system that could beat any casino, including modern non-GamStop casinos.

He initially declines, but his professor eventually convinces him to accept. Therefore, Ben and other students in the group often find themselves playing blackjack in Las Vegas.

The Theory of Everything

All the Hawking fans out there, this is the movie you must see right away. Eddie Redmayne does an excellent job portraying Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking actually thought he was watching himself at one point in an email he sent to director James Marsh.

If you are wondering whether this movie is about Hawking, we are sorry to burst your bubble. It is instead about his relationship with his wife Jane Hawking, as told from her perspective. This will lead to a deeper understanding of the film when the audience is taken into account.

There are a lot of math movies out there, but finding the perfect one can be really hard. Take a look at one of these films if you’d like to improve your math skills and have fun at the same time! It will not let you down. If you also have movies to add to this list, please write them down in the comments section below. We would love to hear from you!
